Mitchell Prentice Trio plays Sonny Rollins ‘A Night at the Village Vanguard’

In November 1957, Sonny Rollins recorded three live sets in Greenwich Village, New York City, at the Village Vanguard Jazz Club. The recordings were compiled into one of the most iconic live albums of Rollins’ discography and released on Blue Note Records.
The Mitchell Prentice Trio will recreate the sessions live in a three-part series of the ‘Rollins Revue’. A tribute to the legacy and life of Sonny Rollins.
Featuring one of Western Canada’s leading jazz drummers and educators, Dr. Jon McCaslin brings excitement and his passion for the jazz tradition and its future to the bandstand. Known for his work on the ‘Four on the Floor blog’, his 2012 award-winning album “Sunalta” on the Cellar Live jazz record label, curating the Calgary Jazz Composers collective and ongoing work with the Wakefield Brewster ‘Pöe Three’ Quartet.
As well as in-demand bassist Adam Pettigrew, a prominent Calgary-based musician active in the local jazz scene, known for performing with the Broadview Trio and the David Lavoie Quartet, and for recently recording with the Way Out Trio and the Angela Wrigley Trio.
Stepping into the role of the Icon, saxophonist Mitchell Prentice pays homage to his hero, Rollins. Mitchell brings his knowledge of bebop and swing to lead the Trio. Mitchell has been active in the Calgary jazz scene and has recently collaborated on the 9th volume of the Calgary Jazz Composers collective and the Timothonius Quartet, alongside leading his own projects across the city.
